13 ARCANE HYMNS Wins Best Production Award

We are happy to announce that "13 Arcane Hymns" took home the Best Album Production award last night from the 2010 Alberta Metal Awards. Congrats to Gustavo De Beauville & Casey Lewis for putting so much hard work into the release. Thank you to all our local and international supporters that are getting this album heard. In relation to the recent Alberta success we'd like to thank Pamela Porosky & Pitch Black Magazine, Kevin & JP from Megawatt Mayhem, Mark & James from Vinland Radio, Beatroute Magazine, The Nocturntable, CJSW 90.9, The Distillery, Liz Janzen, Lori Hager, Chris from Dicken's, Chris Andrade from Offthedial.ca, and everyone who's been spreading the word.

Many thanks to Philip Sim from SUITE 101 for his recent review of "13 Arcane Hymns". Here's an excerpt: "This is a band who can combine the alternative stylings of Tool with the adventurousness, ambition and refusal to compromise of The Dillinger Escape Plan; if there's any justice in the world of music, then '13 Arcane Hymns' is just the beginning of something big for The Unravelling. And if this effort is anything to go by, then the band won't settle for anything less - they will move forward until they are dead."

"13 Arcane Hymns" has been listed under the Calgary Herald's "disc picks". Check out the link here.

The Unravelling review in Metalunderground.com

We would like to acknowledge and thank Progressivity In All from Metalunderground.com for taking the time to review "13 Arcane Hymns". He commented "The Unravelling has made a surprising firebomb of an album here. If you are listener who likes to get enveloped in songs rather than simply listen, there is much to experience here." and called The Unravelling's sound "a clouded mixture of Novembre, Dead Can Dance, Nevermore, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, and Opeth."

Tickets for the upcoming Sept 19 HELMET show with BISON BC and THE UNRAVELLING can be purchased at www.helmetmusic.com.

The Unravelling opening for HELMET

We are honored and excited to announce that we will be opening for HELMET September 19 at Dicken's in Calgary. Helmet is a band we have great respect for, and we can't wait to see what they have prepared on their upcoming CD "Seeing Eye Dog". Check out Helmet and preview "Seeing Eye God" here. Thank you to Helmet and Dicken's. We will see you at the show!

The Unravelling have been recognized by their peers and fans this month, being nominated for 3 Alberta Metal Awards. We were nominated in the Album Production, Album Art and Original Song (Last Rights Protest) categories. It's an honor to be included next to artists we respect such as Divinity, Kataplexis, Exit Strategy, Akakor and other great acts. The event ceremony will take place August 21st at The Distillery in Calgary.

This week, The Unravelling also hit number 1 in the CJSW Metal Charts, as well as number 9 overall. Check out CJSW's charts here. To request The Unravelling and help them hit number 1 overall, call the Request Line - (403) 220-3991 or email requests@cjsw.com.

Also, plans are underway to shoot a music video for "Fire Breather" with director Kevin Currie. We are excited to get started and release some new art. Lords of Metal also reviewed "13 Arcane Hymns" recently, and the review can be seen here.

Get "13 Arcane Hymns" for free

Inspired by an artist we admire, Mr. Trent Reznor, we've decided to follow his advice and offer our album free of charge for those who want to pick it up digitally. As of now, you can get the album for free in high quality 320 kbps mp3 format directly from this website. Simply sign up as a member (either in the top right of this screen or in the music section), totally free of charge to do and it only requires an email address.

Then go to the music section and download the full album along with free b-sides and outtakes.

For those of you who like having the physical product, we've added some new choices for you including a deluxe "13 Arcane Hymns" package which includes a 6 poster set by artist Shaun Friesen & Gustavo De Beauville and an 8 x 10 autographed by the band.

A mini-documentary on The Unravelling is in the works and should be viewable online very soon.
We'd also like to thank Metal-Rules for their recent review of "13 Arcane Hymns". They gave it 4 out of 5, saying "so many diverse and interesting sounds, Tool, Opeth, the quirkiness or Faith No More, the oddity of recent Celtic Frost, man, this thing is just all over the map! 13 ARCANE HYMNS is an extremely dynamic, compositionally interesting and full engaging listen." Read the full review here.

ReGen Magazine also reviewed the release, saying "Dark and loving it, 13 Arcane Hymns exacts in disillusionment and metal.". Read the review and check out ReGen here.

Also, we sat down with Roman Torres from the Slowdive Music Blog for "The Unravelling answer 5". Gus says "It's sad but a lot of bands are a reflection of society I think. They cater to the masses to suckle at the teat of their masters. I firmly believe somewhere out there there's powerful suit-wearing, cigar toting assholes in tall buildings with gold records on their walls going, "They want to shake their asses and swig cheap booze, then give those sheep what they want. Churn that shit out ASAP. I got hookers to bang and blow to inhale." Then bands like Nickelback, State of Shock, Theory of A Deadman, Puddle of Mud, Shinedown, Hinder, Finger Eleven, Seether, Stone Sour, Hedley, Marianas Trench, and Simple Plan get a phone call." Read the full interview here.

More news to come and thank you all for your support!

Slowdive Music Blog review

Our good friends at the Slowdive Music Blog just posted a new review for 13 Arcane Hymns. Creator/writer Roman says "Why is this a must? “13 Arcane Hymns” is brilliant, infectious, and non-complacent. Not to mention urgent, relevant, and thriving full of energy. In an industry that is marred by counterfeits, musicians buying into shallowly defined genres, and industry whims and trends, The Unravelling compose, recorded, and self-release an album that continues that 2010 trend of pulling that proverbial bar higher. This is more than just any ole metal album; this is evolution, a step towards the future, pioneering new directions for a genre in desperate need of that."

Also, be sure to tune in to EGLN and WGFR at Godforsaken Radio June 9th from 7-10 pm EST for a feature on The Unravelling.

13 ARCANE HYMNS IS AVAILABLE NOW! BUY THE PHYSICAL OR DIGITAL VERSIONS EXCLUSIVELY AT WWW.THEUNRAVELLINGMUSIC.COM!

Well, the reviews are rolling in for 13 Arcane Hymns and the medicine seems to be taking. King from Pitch Black Magazine says "It’s impossible to explain The Unravelling’s sound in one sentence. To say it has elements of metal, rock, progressive touches and even an industrial influence that occasionally raises it’s gritty head doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what the Calgary, Alta. based band’s debut album 13 Arcane Hymns encompasses." PBM's Dr. Gore added "Sonically, it sounds like what would happen if Ministry and Tool battled to the death as a means to spawn a new hybrid band to change music as we know it forever." Read the full review and check out Pitch Black Magazine here.

Nate from All Metal Resource says "The Unravelling have created an album that shows a lot of promise, and which kept me interested from beginning to end." and compared the band to Ayreon, Mr. Bungle and Punk Floyd.

The Rock & Roll Guru rated the album 8.5/10, saying "It’s hard to believe that only two guys came up with such an amazing album. If you’re a fan of heavy, dark, rock, than 13 Arcane Hymns is an album you should own. With bold and beautiful music, lyrics that make you think, and lead vocals that range the spectrum like not many can, The Unravelling’s 13 Arcane Hymns is a solid album worth listening to over and over again." Read the review here.

Independent reviewer Lori Hager says "The last time a concept album this powerful emerged was in 1994, with Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral." Read her review here.

Jerry from the popular progressive rock website JerryLucky.com gave the album a glowing review, saying "The 13 songs they’ve packed on this disc are just brimming with aggressive intensity. Oh there are moments where they take a breath but never for very long and with influences such as Tool and Opeth you should have a pretty good idea of the music on display here." Read the full review at JerryLucky.com.

In other news, our 13 Arcane Hymns artist collaborator and close friend Shaun Friesen has won a Digital Alberta Media FRESH Award. Shaun received the Best Animation/Video Award for his contributions to Douglas Rushkoff's 'Life Inc: The Movie' on Friday in Calgary. MAGNET MAGAZINE covers The Unravelling

We are pleased to announce that Magnet Magazine has written a piece on The Unravelling - the "Fire Breather" Tibetan struggle presentation specifically in their popular online column "Film at 11". Many thanks from The Unravelling camp to Magnet Magazine! You can check out the piece here. Be sure to check their other pieces. They've done a nice one on one of our idols, Tom Waits, recently as well.

"Fire Breather" press release courtesy of GRIT PR

Press release - Feb 1, 2010 - GRIT PR:
Fire Breather” Tibetan video goes viral with the anticipation of The Unravelling’s debut album release in the spring.

Worldwide—With over 30,000 views and rising, the “Fire Breather” video’s presence on YouTube has certainly made an impact. Coming across as a band with a philosophy, The Unravelling has created a cult-like following that continues to grow as fast as the hits on You Tube.

This is music with a real message; heart pounding music for the masses that forces the listener to think. Just as the “Fire Breather” Tibetan video is a raw depiction of a wicked truth, and thus being a powerful musical piece, their new album “13 Arcane Hymns” is sure to be a worldwide hit filled with music with a message.

""Fire Breather" was written as a stream of consciousness, states The Unravelling’s Steve Moore. There was no particular theme in mind besides the very personal lyrics. After recording the song and reading the news in 2009 of the intensive struggle of the Tibetan people, and how on some occasions the Tibetan monks would even set themselves on fire as a means of protest - self sacrifice, I was amazed at the parallels between their struggle and the lyrics in the song, and I'm happy it has this kind of double meaning now."

There is no doubt that The Unravelling makes one think, listen and open their minds to a wider world view and awareness. Hailing from Calgary, Canada, the members are inspired by a very diverse range of artists, such as Dead Can Dance, Tool, Opeth, Nine Inch Nails, Arcana, Jeff Buckley and Dillinger Escape Plan. At first listen an audience can without a doubt hear those influences. Especially in “Fire Breather,” a strong Opeth and Nine Inch Nails vibe is felt. Pure Grain Audio describes their sound as “tactfully diverse music that’s overflowing with a bloodthirsty passion.” Here's the video - but be fore warned - it's very graphic and disturbing:

Positive review from D-Days Revenge

A new review has come in from the kind metalheads at D-Days Revenge, a popular metal news and information/reviews website, who say "The entire offering is very well done and very creative. I should also mention that this is a DUO! It's amazing to think that only 2 people can create this much energy and noise."

News on our artist, Shaun Friesen

Shaun has been working on consciousness expanding art for many years now, and his work continues to improve. You will be able to see a collaboration between Shaun Friesen and our very own Gustavo De Beauville on the upcoming album cover for 13 Arcane Hymns.

Until then, you can wet your beak with a wide variety of products ranging from posters, art cards, fridge magnets and stickers at Shaun's official 2009 catalogue - click here to visit. Free Zen has our personal seal of approval as the best place to do your Christmas shopping. Please skip trampling employees down at your local Wal Mart and try some pineal induction with these fine geometries!

In other news, The band is rehearsing and the album will be released Spring 2010. Remember to check out The Unravelling in December's issue of Music Connection Magazine featuring Sting on the cover. You can also check out a new interview with Gus & Steve of The Unravelling in the "Who's the Band?" feature at the popular UK blog Blazing Minds. In the piece, when asked about the ultimate direction of The Unravelling, Gus responds "I’m seeking an outlet for our art where hopefully we can inspire people to feel empowered and able to take on challenges they would have previously avoided. All of us have so much potential within ourselves, but life seems to get in the way and make us passive, rat-racing sheep." Read the full interview here.

The Unravelling in MC Mag - Skinny Puppy review

Music Connection Magazine has named The Unravelling in it's top 25 new music picks of 2009. We'd like to sincerely thank everyone at Music Connection for the nod. More details coming soon once the issue is in stores.

The Unravelling vocalist Steve Moore recently wrote a review of industrial greats Skinny Puppy's recent Vancouver performance at the Rickshaw Theatre November 3rd. The main purpose of the article was to bring some more attention to Skinny Puppy's return, as there hasn't been much press about them recently. The more fans of this excellent band, the better. Check out the full review at Off The Dial here.

Mr. Shaun Friesen is busy at work putting the final touches on the 13 Arcane Hymns booklet before it goes to press. Copies will be available shortly.

The Unravelling grace the cover of Digital Gig Mag

Digital Gig Magazine's new issue #5 features The Unravelling on the cover, along with an in depth interview about the soon-to-be-released CD "13 Arcane Hymns". Digital Gig's Adrian West says "The Unravelling craft their own intense brand of intelligent brutality that they punctuate with moments of effortless, melodic lucidity. The end product is a band that is definitely going somewhere and they know exactly how they’re going to get there."

Check out the feature/cover here at Digital Gig's website.

PITCH BLACK MAGAZINE AND THE UNRAVELLING

Our good friends at Alberta's newest heavy music publication Pitch Black Magazine have recently featured The Unravelling. The feature was done by Pitch Black's founder Pamela Porosky, who was one of the speaking guests at this past weekend's successful Noctis metal music business conference (put on by Scarab Productions).

You can check out the feature here.

Also, be sure to pick up a copy of this month's Music Connection Magazine for a very positive advance review of "13 Arcane Hymns". It was given an 8.2 rating, and Music Connection added "The weapons-grade riffage and wailing vocals make a serious impact. Fans of NIN, Skinny Puppy and God Lives Underwater will revel in these songs of both alienation and guarded optimism."

Check it out here or buy a copy at your nearest retailer.

Also, more newly mastered tracks have been added to the music section. This must mean the album is coming soon. Guaranteed to be sooner than Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.

The happenings

Be sure to check out the brand new feature article on The Unravelling at Pure Grain Audio here. The piece was written by Amanda Cuda so we thank her and everyone at Pure Grain Audio for their support. Recently The Unravelling has been played by Megawatt Mayhem, The Autopsy Report and The Metal Deli. Thanks goes out to these excellent shows.

As of this weekend, the master copy of "13 Arcane Hymns" is ready. Gus De Beauville has completed a draft of what should become the official cover artwork. Logistics for the booklet are now underway. The physical copy will be well worth buying. We are planning a 16 page booklet and digipack with full lyrics, artwork, photos, quotes and background information. Sign up for this website to keep updated on the official release. Copies will be available exclusively right here at the official website.

Until then, we hope you enjoy the two newly mastered tracks we've posted in the Music section, "Open Skull" and "Unscripted Disclosure". The demo versions have all been removed. More to come soon.

Our track "Fire Breather" was used in this video showing some footage of the Tibetan struggle against the Chinese government. While this is not the only parallel for the highly personal themes of "Fire Breather", it fits quite well. Check it out below.
